Our motto is "Success is an on-going process."
Established in 1969 by Steve Scott, Welcome Mat is the oldest and most respected judo, jujitsu and sambo club in the Kansas City area. With branch dojos (clubs) located throughout the entire metropolitan area, Welcome Mat offers the best quality coaching and training available. Welcome Mat is nationally-recognized for the high-quality training opportunities and coaching offered. Over 300 individual athletes who started their training at Welcome Mat have won national or international gold medals, with over 400 others who have won silver or bronze medals in judo, sambo, sport jujitsu and submission grappling events. Thousands of people have also trained at Welcome Mat in self-defense jujitsu and learned judo and jujitsu to enrich their lives. Visit our other website at www.WelcomeMatJudoClub.com for more information or call Steve Scott at (816) 210-4484.

Our approach is to develop well-rounded, skilled and confident athletes in both sport and self-defense.
All areas of skill are emphasized. Skill training in many techniques used in judo, sambo, sport jujitsu and submission grappling such as throws, takedowns, armlocks, chokes and strangles, hold-downs and leglocks are emphasized. Self-defense skills such as wrist and armlocks, striking techniques, and specialized personal safety skills are emphasized in our self-defense classes.
Welcome Mat offers a wide range of training opportunities in grappling and self-defense for anyone who is interested in studying Shingitai Jujitsu, Kodokan Judo or Russian Sambo. We introduced Russian Sambo to the Kansas City area in 1977 and have been a national leader in that sport since. Welcome Mat is one of the leading training centers in the United States for Shingitai Jujitsu and has been instrumental in the development and growth of Kodokan Judo in this area since 1969. Our approach is to offer the best quality coaching possible in an antmosphere where everyone is welcome. Our group of coaches, headed by Steve Scott, are some of the best technicians and teachers in the United States. We believe that if you are successful, we are successful.

A spectacular throw in a sambo match at the Welcome Mat Games. The Russian sport of sambo emphasizes throws, armlocks, leglocks and hold-downs.
Judo and Shingitai Jujitsu also emphasize joint locks as shown here with this photo of juji gatame (cross-body armlock). Don't be mislead; Judo isn't only throwing techniques. It has great groundfighting!
Shingitai Jujitsu is a rugged, scientific martial art that is used in any grappling sport such as judo, sambo or submission grappling, martial art, MMA or self-defense. This photo shows two Welcome Mat grapplers going for a leglock in a Shingitai training session.
Judo is an Olympic sport and Welcome Mat athletes excel in it, competing in both regular judo events as well as in Freestyle Judo events. The throwing techniques in judo are often spectacular as shown by one of our Welcome Mat athletes who is throwing his opponent for an Ippon (full point) to win the match.

MAKE WELCOME MAT YOUR HOME DOJO
Founded in 1969 by Steve Scott, the Welcome Mat Judo and Jujitsu Club is the oldest active judo club in the Kansas City area. While we make no boastful claims, Welcome Mat does have a proud tradition of success. We have developed many champions (over 250 individual athletes from Welcome Mat have won U.S. national championships in judo, sambo, sport jujtisu and submission grappling) and the technical expertise here is respected and recognized nationally. We take pride that our program offers instruction for all levels of interest. Whether you want to become a competitive athlete, seek practical self-defense instruction or are looking for an interesting martial art to study, Welcome Mat has a lot to offer. Whatever your goals may be, you will find excellent training at Welcome Mat. Through the years, we have been successful in coaching people in judo, jujitsu, sambo and submission grappling and have used these activities to instill positive values that make a difference in many lives. We offer a positive, open atmosphere, yet retain the traditional discipline that the martial arts emphasize. We have programs for adults and kids and welcome everyone to participate. Welcome Mat is a community based program that has purposely housed itself in community centers and other public places since its inception. It is our intention to offer top quality coaching and instruction for a fair and inexpensive financial cost. We attempt to keep our prices low by offering excellent instruction through participating community centers and other facilities. Welcome Mat offers training in a variety of facilities listed on the Dojos and Links page. Steve Scott personally teaches classes at the Sylvester Powell Community Center and the Kansas City North Community Center. If you are interested in training with us, call Steve Scott at (816) 210-4484 or e-mail stevescottjudo@yahoo.com for more information.
